Story by Senior Airman Jenifer Calhoun

    380th Air Expeditionary Wing

SOUTHWEST ASIA -- When deployed Airmen arrive at a non-disclosed base here to take on their new duties with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, one of their first stops will be at the finance office to get their deployed pay started.

Once they step in the door, it's the job of Capt. Brian Vance, 380th AEW comptroller officer and his team to take care of those Airmen from the start to the end of their deployment in meeting their financial needs.

"We not only ensure our people get their entitlements started, we also resolve any pay issues by correcting them so our deployed wingmen can focus on the mission instead of their finances," said Vance, who is deployed from the Secretary of the Air Force Financial Operations and Workforce Management Directorate at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. "Deployed Airmen and their families should not have to worry about having access to money to pay their bills back home and it is our goal to ease any financial worries."

Vance, whose hometown is Wichita Falls, Texas, said his office also manages a wide array of other Air Force finance and comptroller programs for the wing.

"We also work hard to minimize cash on the battlefield through management of the Eagle Cash Program," Vance said. "This program enables electronic purchases for necessities and morale items alike. We are also the sole source of local currency which enables members to participate in morale trips for shopping and entertainment. Additionally, we manage funds availability that enables wing wide purchases for things such as multi-million dollar construction projects for aircraft hangers to new basketball goals for intramural sports to everyday office supplies."

A nine year Air Force veteran, Vance said his family has a long line of service and that he's proud to support the deployed effort.

"I come from a family with generations of proud military service," said the 1993 graduate of Long Beach High School, Miss., and the 2004 master's degree graduate of the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, Mass. "My family has generations of military service members dating back to before the Civil War. Most recently, my father served in the U.S. Navy and my grandfathers served in the Marines, Navy and Air Force. It is an honor to represent our country both at home and abroad."

The captain said he will continue to do his best while deployed with the 380th AEW and he knows his team will also continue to do their best. "No money, no mission," he said. "It's just that simple."

The 380th AEW is comprised of four groups and 12 squadrons and the wing's deployed mission includes air refueling, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of overseas contingency operations in Southwest Asia. The wing supports Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa.
