MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Military Health System (MHS) Genesis a medical patient portal that was initially introduced to the Department of Defense (DoD) medical facilities in 2016 and continues to be implemented across the DoD. The system is being adopted in an effort to streamline and improve the overall effectiveness of patient care of military members and their families. Naval Health Clinic Quantico has been hosting training sessions, led by MHS Genesis trainers, for care providers across the National Capital Region. These individuals will be trained on how the system works and how best to implement the changes in their day to day work.

“Genesis is a new system that the military has adopted to put all the pre-existing systems in one, to make it into a streamline system for patient care within labs, pharmacies, and any of the wards at hospitals and clinics that they use as their primary care,” said HM2 Harlie Stewart, lab technician.

MHS Genesis is slated to replace the TRICARE patient portal currently used by DoD personnel.

The new portal is intended to help both the patients and care providers by improving and simplifying processes for the patients as well as making more information more easily accessible to care providers. According to Jerry Place, medical laboratory technician with Marine Corps Base Quantico Naval Health Clinic, the benefits are extensive.

“The primary benefits are definitely the updated software, the usability of the applications, the information that can be retrieved within, also the safeguards of not conflicting with different things, and that other facilities are included in this so you have connectivity as well,” he explained.

Furthermore, with the multitude of changes, care providers across the DoD are going through training on the MHS Genesis system, to ensure the best transition from Tricare.

“The importance of this class is to get our staff members trained up, to get all this streamlined, work on any troubleshooting issues that they might have, getting them up to date on what the system does and getting hands on experience with the system,” said Stewart.

Virgil Thomas, one of the trainers at Naval Health Clinic Quantico, is guiding students through the overall functionality of the system. He focuses his attention on each student, helping them navigate the specific applications in MHS Genesis based on their area of responsibility.

“MHS Genesis will track everything you do in the system, what you click on, how long you are in a window. If you are in DoD leadership you will be able to monitor all the different facets of those activities,” said Thomas. “It is built to hold people accountable, hold the staff accountable to make sure everyone is operating at the highest level for the improvement of overall patient care, and making sure we are at our most efficient and able to produce revenue for the DoD.”

According to Thomas, MHS Genesis is in the final steps of being implemented for the continental U.S. The system was first introduced out west in 2016, now it has made its way to the east coast. MHS Genesis will be live across the National Capital Region in late March, 2023. The system should be implemented over seas in DoD facilities by the end of this year if not then early 2024.
