PAKTIKA PROVINCE, Afghanistan — Paktika Provincial Council members gathered to nominate and elect senatorial candidates inside the Provincial Council Office in Sharana, Afghanistan, Jan. 10.
Paktika's nine provincial council members voted on the senate representation for Paktika in Afghanistan's Senate Upper House in Kabul.
Also in attendance were Paktika's governor, Abdul Qayum Khan Katawazay, Paktika provincial line directors, tribal leaders and media to witness and record the event.
Juma din Gyanwal, Haji Khan Muhammed, Abdul Majeed and Fazal Rahaman were eligible candidates for the senatorial positions. After the votes were cast and counted, Haji Khan Muhammed and Juma din Gayanwal were elected to represent Paktika in Afghanistan's Senate Upper House.
In accordance with Afghan law, the two elected senators will go to Kabul to represent Paktika, while the two open Provincial Council positions were filled to complete the nine-person committee. Abdul momin Pakeryar and Zafar will be the two new Provincial council members.
