JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq -- Staff Sgt. Liliana Tavera of the 332nd Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron is the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing's Tuskegee Airman of the Week for Dec. 27, 2009- Jan. 2.
"Sgt. Tavera has done a phenomenal job here at JBB," said Brig. Gen. Craig Franklin, 332nd AEW commander. "Her optimism, enthusiasm for the job, and her ability to lead and have a positive effect on her subordinates has made her an exceptional Airman."
After congratulating the new winner in front of wing leadership, Franklin presented Tavera with the award and a commander's coin at the wing headquarters, Jan. 7.
Tavera, a customer service technician, rapidly outfitted 150 warfighters with flame-resistant Army combat uniforms, which in turn, mitigated the risks force-protection Airmen face outside the wire and helped save lives.
The Salt Lake City native also coordinated the shipment of more than 100 articles of cold- and wet-weather gear for five detachments at local forward operating bases. Her efforts allowed 65 Airmen to receive much needed gear and bridge a gap between local FOBs and JBB.
"I never thought that I would be here in Iraq," said Tavera. "It feels great to be part of something this big, a once-in-a-lifetime feeling, knowing that I will forever be part of this heritage. It makes me proud, knowing what I do in one way or another is impacting the mission here."
Sergeant Tavera, deployed from Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., also focused her efforts on volunteering her time to improve the quality of life for people at JBB.
She organized a base-wide 5K run, volunteered multiple hours at the United Service Organizations and assisted with scheduling movies for base personnel. Sergeant Tavera has also found time for personal development. She has completed both an English and sociology course with a 4.0 grade point average.
Tavera was nominated by Master Sgt. Robert Daniels, the 332nd ELRS chief enlisted manager.
"Sgt. Tavera goes above and beyond to not only meet the standard but exceed it," said Sergeant Daniels. "She tackles her responsibilities with positive energy and attitude. She not only performs her job in an exceptional manner, but she also balances a busy school schedule and still has time to volunteer. Tavera is a perfect example of an Airman that practices the whole-person concept."
Airmen between the ranks of E-1 and E-5 are eligible to become the 332nd AEW Tuskegee Airman of the Week, based on accomplishments on- and off-duty.
