    Naval Station Rota, Spain

This past year, Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota Safety Department has been very busy in our endeavor to make Rota the safest base in the Navy! One of the newest members to the safety team is Cristina Villadangos Carnero who joined the team in March. Her impact on the Rota community has been immediate with performing occupational safety and health (OSH) assessments, investigating mishaps, and unsafe condition reports.

During this past year, the safety department completed 526 safety inspections, identified 213 individual deficiencies (hazards to personnel and facilities) with 206 deficiencies successfully abated (corrected). They also investigated 29 mishap reports to identify causal factors and provide information and training to prevent re-occurrences. 31 unsafe/unhealthful working condition reports were received, investigated and closed with nine hazards still awaiting corrections. Interim controls have been implemented to protect personnel in the interim while these are awaiting correction. Their success is due to the support of the personnel assigned to NAVSTA Rota, especially the collateral duty safety officers (CDSOs) from all of NAVSTA departments and tenant commands.

In May 2022, NAVSTA Rota safety department was evaluated during a week-long occupational safety and health management evaluation with Commander Navy Installations Command (CNIC). During the week, the evaluators assessed the safety programs and support services provided to the departments and tenant commands. The installation received an overall score of 93.4%, well above the 67% average from the 15 other commands that were evaluated in 2022. In addition, NAVSTA Rota was one of the two commands graded as “effective” where the others were graded as “partially effective or ineffective.”

Next year looks to be even better with new challenges to keep safety programs at peak performance while implementing improvements in their support and programs.
