KABUL, Afghanistan - Insurgents purposely attacked innocent civilians in eastern Afghanistan Jan. 7.
The attack occurred in Gardez City, Paktia province, killing several civilians, including a young child, along with a member of the Afghan national security forces. The explosion also injured numerous Afghan civilians.
"Clearly, the enemy is attempting to wage a war of fear and intimidation and is intentionally targeting innocent Afghan men, women and children as they go about their daily lives," said Maj. Gen. Mike Scaparrotti, Commanding General Regional Command East and Combined Joint Task Force-82. "As we mourn these indiscriminate killings together with our Afghan partners, we also declare our resolve to bring those responsible to justice and bring peace to the people of Afghanistan."
ANSF were the first to respond to the scene, followed by ISAF service members who assisted with security and medical evacuations.
Several of the wounded have been evacuated to ISAF medical facilities for treatment. Both ANSF and ISAF service members are continuing to assess the situation.
