Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived aboard a Nevada Air National Guard C-130 Hercules, greeted by excited parents and children, to participate in Operation Santa Claus at Atlantic Aviation at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport December 11, 2022.
Operation Santa Claus is an event where a local non-profit company ,The Children’s Cabinet, nominates 25 local families in need for a day of holiday cheer and festivities which include food, games, and gifts.
An Atlantic Aviation hangar was turned into a winter wonderland with Christmas trees for each family, and gifts for all the children stacked under the trees.
The event, in its 8th year, is coordinated by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, Atlantic Aviation, and Reno-Tahoe Aviation Group and included many volunteers including North Valleys High School JROTC, Reno Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol, Flips Gymnastics, and many more.
Retired Nevada Air National Guard Lt. Col. Todd Hudson had participated in the event in prior years when he was the 152nd Operations Support Squadron Commander. However, this year Hudson, now a Senior Aerospace Science Instructor at North Valleys High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program in Reno, Nev., volunteered with his JROTC cadets.
“It is a magical event and a highlight to see Santa come out of a C-130,” said Hudson, “Being here with Junior ROTC is a great way for them to see how you can give back to your community. Even if you don’t have a lot–you can give back a lot.”
