PARSIPPPANY, N.J. – ”The Employer Support Guard and Reserve establishes a symbiotic relationship between employer and employee,” said Brig. Gen. Beth Salisbury, deputy commanding general U.S. Army Reserve 99th Readiness Division, who took part in an ESGR Statement of Support signing Nov. 9 at the Wyndham Hotel and Resorts.

The first Statement of Support was signed December 13, 1972, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense by the Chairman of the Board of General Motors. President Richard Nixon was the first President to sign a Statement of Support, and in 2005 every Federal Cabinet Secretary and all Federal agencies signed a Statement of Support to signify their continuing efforts to be model employers. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands of employers have signed Statements of Support, pledging their support to Guard and Reserve employees.

“During that half-century, our service members across all branches have proved their strength, resilience and patriotism time and again from the jungles of Vietnam to the mountains of Afghanistan and deserts of Iraq.” Salisbury

The Statement of Support is the cornerstone of ESGR’s effort to gain and maintain employer support for the Guard and Reserve. The intent of the program is to increase employer support by encouraging employers to act as advocates for employee participation in the military. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the Nation’s Guard and Reserve units.

“This relationship truly embodies the dual nature of all our Citizen-Soldier, who must continuously balance their civilian and military careers,” Salisbury shared.

ESGR, a Department of Defense office, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment.

“We appreciate the example continuously set even after their service has ended,” said Kate Kasabian, Director at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts. “To the active military members, reservists, guard, first responders and veterans here today thank you to all that you have sacrificed and thank you for your service,” concluded Kasabian.
