FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The Fort Bragg Child and Youth Services received a surprise award of $2,050 from the Boys and Girls Club of America and The Starbucks Foundation, Oct. 26.

CYS and the BGCA have a long-standing, nationwide affiliation and are in constant partnership.

“We were really surprised to receive such a generous and unexpected award,” stated Margaret Lilly, chief of CYS. “We have a very strong relationship with the BGCA and are in a constant partnership with them so we can provide the best programs and services to all our military children.”

The BGCA is a national organization that offers programs aimed at empowering young people to succeed academically, have healthy lives, and develop virtues. According to Merriel Stebbins, CYS youth administrator, it has a standing relationship with CYS at every Army installation.

“The programing that the BGCA offers is a major benefit to our military children,” said Stebbins. “They help provide continuity to military youth who are constantly in transition from one base to the next.”

In addition, all military children are eligible candidates for the grants and scholarships provided by the BGCA.

The award will be used toward activities, events and items which will enhance programming in Chay and Tolson Youth Centers. The planned events will take place before the end of the calendar year and will be created based on the input and interests of the kids at the youth centers.

“We are very thankful for our relationship with the BGCA,” said Lilly. “It is a great benefit to our kids, and we are looking forward to using the money towards a fun event for our middle-school aged youth and teens.”
