SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany - As one of the U.S. Air Force’s oldest organizations, the honor guard works to ensure the Air Force’s image, heritage and mission are honored, promoted and protected. These Airmen work hard to become members of this elite organization as the program continues to be the standard of military professionalism and discipline.

The 52nd Fighter Wing Base Honor Guard is responsible for providing event and ceremonial support to professionally represent Spangdahlem Air Base, as well as the Air Force in its entirety, while continuing the legacy of previous members who served before them. They must uphold the highest level of perfection at all times in the areas of dress and appearance, ceremonies, drill, customs and courtesies and more.

“Being in the honor guard itself is a privilege, it's not something that’s taken lightly,” said Capt. Nathanael Avila, 52nd Fighter Wing Base Honor Guard officer in charge. “It’s my way of paying back for those who have given their life, for those that have been able to successfully serve 20 years, and in order to give them the honors they’ve earned.”

The base honor guard is a voluntary special duty that comes with a great deal of responsibility as they represent Airmen, their base and the military as a whole.

“It's all about professionalism,” said Airman 1st Class Michael Nilges, 52nd Fighter Wing Base Honor Guard member. “Everything we do has to be as close to perfect as it possibly can be, Every single movement is about discipline. When we go out and do a ceremony and we do it right, it shows the professionalism of the Air Force.”

The honor guard is an extension of the 52nd FW’s professionalism and commitment to our partners and allies – something showcased through the support of ceremonies around the theater. One example of this is the participation at the upcoming Veterans Day ceremony that will be held at the Luxembourg American Cemetery. The ceremony, traditionally supported by the 52nd FW base honor guard, will pay respect to the men and women who have served not only in the U.S., Germany, or Luxembourg, but those who have served worldwide.
