    MCBH PRESS RELEASE

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - On October 25th, 2021, Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) published a press release advising the local community that a recent maintenance project had caused a process disruption at the MCBH Wastewater Reclamation Facility (WRF). This disruption resulted in the release of water exceeding permit limitations for enterococcus [Limit: 57,850 (No./100mL)]. Immediately after identifying this occurrence, MCBH implemented daily water quality sampling and analysis. Samples collected and analyzed on October 25, 26, and 27 all produced results well below permitted limits of enterococcus and confirmed stabilization of the treatment process during the on-going repair work.

With approval from the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) Clean Water Branch, the public advisory for enterococcus exceedance has been cancelled.

Public works wastewater plants are planned and designed with a 25 year lifecycle. The MCBH WRF is at the end of that lifecycle and is currently undergoing an improvement project to replace primary components. This large-scale project makes significant technological and material improvements and includes maintenance to the electrical distribution systems and controls, polishing pond improvements, and WRF redundancy and modernization upgrades. The project will result in a more modern plant capable of greater effectiveness and efficiency.

As work continues on the WRF, MCBH will monitor water quality to ensure appropriate enterococcus levels. The installation will continue to coordinate with the HDOH throughout the project, however, this type of work inherently raises the potential of temporary enterococcus exceedances. The WRF is applying best management practices to minimize the risk of future issues during these improvements and will remain transparent to the public throughout the process.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii is dedicated to continuing good environmental stewardship practices and recognizes the important role our installation plays in the protection of the local environment.
