The Garrison’s Spiritual Resiliency Office held its monthly luncheon series on October 19 at Garrison Headquarters Building 4488. The luncheons are designed to strengthen spiritual resiliency for Army Soldiers, civilians, contractors and their families.
Sgt. 1st Class Vanessa Thompson, Non-Commissioned Officer, Bicentennial Chapel told participants the luncheon is designed to foster sharing information that helps connect individuals to each other and strengthen teambuilding efforts.
Thompson spoke to more than 40 persons, during the two 30 minute sessions. This month’s theme is The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and focused on a book authored by Stephen Covey.
Thompson challenged participants to think about the way they handle everyday challenges and determine if they can find new ways of thinking about those challenges in order to make better decisions.
“We have the power to choose to be proactive or reactive in any situation. Decide what is important in our life. Put first things first and do what’s important. You are not a product of your circumstances. You are a product of your decisions. This book can be a helpful tool to change the way you think,” Thompson said.
Thompson led the discussion for 15 minutes and examined each of the seven habits of highly effective people outlined in Covey’s book:
Habit 1: Be Proactive. Principles of Personal Vision
Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind. Principles of Personal Leadership
Habit 3: Put First Things First. Principles of Personal Management
Habit 4: Think Win/Win. Principles of Interpersonal, Leadership
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Principles of Emphatic Communication
Habit 6: Synergize. Principles of Creative Cooperation
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. Principles of Balanced Self-Renewal

Participants received a free copy of Covey’s book and a guided journal. Thompson encouraged participants to read the entire book and complete the journal in their personal time.
Chaplain Lt. Col. Charles Lahmon, Bicentennial Chapel said this was one of the largest turnouts for the luncheon group. He thinks the event was a success.
“We had a great turnout today. So many persons attended our first session that we had to order more food. We want to encourage more people to attend the luncheons. I like that we get a chance to sit down and fellowship with the workforce in this setting. We have an opportunity to share a message that can help them grow and we also provide them lunch. It’s a win for everyone involved. ”
