The F&ES team at HAF/A4C and around the enterprise have been hard at work on several Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. Recently, they released two “first of their kind” documents to the field: The F&ES Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Strategic Plan and the Pregnancy Guidebook.
The first document, the D&I Strategic Plan 2022-27, is a strategic working document which provides recommendations and develops Lines of Effort to create and sustain a healthy work climate, affording each service member and civilian employee the right to serve, advance, and be evaluated based solely on individual merit and performance. This action plan directly supports the 15 recommendations of the DoD Board of Diversity to Improve Racial and Ethnic D&I in the US Military. Air Force F&ES Career Field Manager, CMSgt Philip Winkelman said, “we are thankful to the members of the D&I working group for their hard work and dedication to promote a positive cultural change within our F&ES enterprise.” Air Force Fire Chief, Tim Pitman, added “F&ES is aggressively moving forward by taking the lead for the Department of the Air Force (DAF) regarding D&I.”
It’s important to note that as a precursor to this effort, the Air Force Women In Fire (AFWIF) Working Group, also known as Phoenix Ignited, paved the way for the D&I Strategic Plan. The new Strategic Plan will integrate the AFWIF goals already identified within the Phoenix Ignited Strategic Plan 2021.
Phoenix Ignited also recently released the WIF Pregnancy Guidebook, a useful tool for helping firefighters, supervisors, and commanders understand all aspects of pregnancy as it relates to a career in the Fire Department. AFWIF team member, Tiana Bykowski, said, “AFWIF recognized a need to provide better understanding of what the experience of pregnancy is like and how leaders can support their people even though they may have never experienced pregnancy themselves.” The intent is for this guidance is to be used as a source for FAQs, best practices, and as a central point of reference for Federal, DoD and Air Force guidance. Bykowski added, “the guide should assist leaders with how their organization can support, assist, and retain firefighters who don’t want to make the choice between having a family and having a successful career in the AF F&ES career field.”
