U.S. Air National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Scott Woods accepted authority as the 111th Attack Wing Command Chief from 111th ATKW Commander Col. Deane Thomey during a ceremony here, Oct. 15, 2022.
Command chiefs offer counsel to their unit commanders on all enlisted matters, such as those affecting the command's readiness, training, morale, quality of life, and the technical and professional development of all enlisted members in the organization.
“When you stand up in front of 900 individuals in formation around you, that is when it hits you that you now have the responsibility for all of those people’s careers, morale, happiness and training requirements,” said Woods. “It is a truly humbling experience.”
During the ceremony, Chief Master Sgt. Robert Ferguson relinquished his authority and recalled his time as the Wing’s command chief master sergeant.
“I spent time reflecting on my three years and the amazing work and accomplishments of this Wing and it didn’t seem real,” said Ferguson. “The work we did during COVID-19, our domestic ops, and what this Wing contributed between the civil unrest in Philadelphia, the capitol riots in DC, and countless other engagements, I couldn’t be prouder of what each and every one of you has accomplished in these three years. And, I couldn't be prouder to be a member of this Wing.”
Prior to becoming 111th ATKW Command Chief, Woods served as the senior enlisted leader for the 111th Operations Support Squadron here. He also served as president of the promotion board that selected Ferguson for the role of command chief three years ago.
"To have this ceremony between the two of us really brings the relationship full circle,” said Woods.
Thomey reflected on the impact Ferguson made as his senior enlisted leader.
"We bid farewell to Chief Ferguson, said Thomey. “As one of my closest advisors and a
tireless advocate for our 900 enlisted Airmen, he will be sorely missed. I wish he and his family the best as they move onto the next phase of their lives together.”
Thomey welcomed Woods and talked about his selection as senior enlisted leader to carry the Wing into the future.
“Without a doubt, Chief Woods is the right man to succeed Chief Ferguson,” said Thomey. “After an exhaustive search across the Air National Guard, and interviews with many highly-qualified candidates from around the country, he clearly rose to the top. He is someone who will be the greatest of champions for our enlisted members, and has a reputation of speaking ‘truth to power,' which is a quality I personally value as the
commander."
