Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Rodgers

    Carrier Strike Group 10

Sailors from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 46, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 flew from the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) to Tanagra, Greece, to participate in the 10th annual Athens Flying Week to demonstrate U.S. air capabilities, Sept. 15 – Sept. 19, 2022.

More than 30,000 visitors attended the weekend air show where two MH-60s were among 30 military and civilian flight displays from 10 nations, including military participation from Greece, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

The Sailors participated in three days of the air show, providing a static display of both MH-60R and MH-60S aircraft for the practice and demonstration days of the exhibition.

"The purpose of the show was to get multiple countries and their aviation teams and armed services together to demonstrate aerobatic talents and airpower to the local public of Tanagra, Greece,” Lt. Alex Owens, joint mission planning officer assigned to HSC-5.

The detachment was the only American presence at the Athens Flying Week and afforded CSG-10 the opportunity to interact with key members of the Hellenic Navy, including pilots of the Sikorsky S-70B-6 Aegean Hawk (SH-70B) and other partners and allies.

Outside of their official responsibilities in Tanagra, personnel took liberty in Chalkida and Eritrea, as well as made day trips to Athens to tour the ruins of the Acropolis.

"The local culture in Chalkida, Tanagra, and Athens was welcoming and vivacious,” said Lt. Cmdr. Steven Berres. “The Greek people were very accommodating and we were excited to share their culture."

George H.W. Bush is the flagship of CSG-10, George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG). CSG-10 is comprised of George H.W. Bush, CVW-7, DESRON-26, the Information Warfare Commander, and the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55).

The ships of DESRON 26 within CSG-10 are the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Nitze (DDG 94), USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Truxtun (DDG 103), and USS Delbert D. Black (DDG 119).

The squadrons of CVW-7 embarked aboard George H.W. Bush are the “Sidewinders” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 86, the “Jolly Rogers” of VFA-103, “Nighthawks” of VFA-136, the “Pukin Dogs” of VFA-143, the “Bluetails” of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 121, the “Patriots” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140, the “Nightdippers” of HSC-5, and the “Grandmasters” of HSM-46.

GHWBCSG is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa area of operations, employed by U.S. Sixth Fleet to defend U.S., allied, and partner interests.
