SAN FRANCISCO – The city of San Francisco officially commenced the 41st annual San Francisco Fleet Week at a press conference Oct. 4, 2022.

San Francisco Fleet Week is an annual public event that honors the contributions of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces while advancing cooperation and knowledge among civilian and military-based humanitarian assistance personnel.

“Fleet Week is a community event,” said Lewis Loeven, executive director of San Francisco Fleet Week. “It is throughout the city, off the waterfront and in the neighborhoods.”

Service members and San Franciscans will have an opportunity to interact with each other, while participating in a number of community relations projects and events, including ship tours, performances by the both the Navy Band Southwest and the 1st Marine Division Band and the 2022 air show featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, throughout the week.

“But the week isn’t just about the events,” said London Breed, mayor of San Francisco. “It’s also an opportunity for us to remember that San Francisco, as such a major city, is also disaster prone.”

Throughout the week, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard forces and assets will be working alongside civilian agencies and city officials in joint training and disaster response exercises.

“This is us, the military, working with [San Francisco’s] emergency responders, the police, the firemen, emergency response agencies, ” said Rear Adm. Wayne Baze, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3. “We’re trying to hone our skills to be able to respond in times of natural disaster; cooperatively and effectively.”

Baze stated he wants the San Francisco community to take advantage of the opportunity to work and interact with service members during San Francisco Fleet Week.

“Get to know your service members; what they’re about and what they do on your behalf,” said Baze. “Because we work for you.”
