“I really do appreciate the chance to come out here; it’s still surreal,” said Sgt. Tyrone V. Travers, an aircraft maintenance material readiness list manager, with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 Reinforced (VMM-268), Marine Rotational Force-Darwin 22.

For Travers, the Transpacific (TRANSPAC) flight from Darwin, Australia was more than just a tactical redeployment to his parent command at Marine Corps Base, Hawaii. VMM-268 conducted the TRANSPAC to practice long range capabilities across the Pacific Ocean. Starting in Darwin, Australia, the team made their way to Hawaii with stops in Queensland, Fiji, American Samoa, and Kiribati.

Travers, an American Samoa Native, knew he had to take this opportunity when he heard about it.

“I haven't been home since I left for bootcamp in 2016, It’s not easy to get out here.”

The TRANSPAC team landed in American Samoa on Thursday, Sept. 15. After going through customs and checking in to the hotel, Travers was able to surprise his family at their home. With only one night at home, Travers made the most of his time, spending his evening laughing, reminiscing, and sharing his Marine Corps experiences with his family.

“The best feeling was just being able to hug my mom and my siblings. They didn’t know I was coming so being able to surprise them like this means the world.”

When the long awaited and well spent family time came to an end, Travers said his goodbyes and made his way to the hotel in preparation for his early flight the next day.

On Friday morning at the air terminal, Travers was talking with locals when he heard a shout from the parking lot. His sister was there to say one last goodbye. He had originally told his family to not come to the terminal for more goodbyes, but he was glad he got to share this bittersweet moment with his sister.

“The warmth of being able to come home and see your family after so long is priceless. Even though it was for a short period of time, it’s a moment I will never forget. Some time is better than no time at all.”
