NEWPORT, R.I. – Julie White, director of engineering in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Sensors and Sonar Systems Department, recently earned the Department of the Navy (DON) Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the third highest honorary civilian award bestowed by the U.S. Navy.

White, a resident of Middletown, Rhode Island, serves as the first-line supervisor for the chief engineers and the chief analyst. Over the course of her 33-year career with Division Newport and its predecessor organization, Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London, Connecticut, she has built a reputation as a “consummate professional and distinguished technical leader,” the award states.

As the director of engineering, she provides administrative and technical supervision to the department’s chief engineers and chief system analyst while continuing to support multiple program offices. “She has solidified the technical and quality processes in the Sensors and Sonar Systems Department while providing technical leadership to critical fleet efforts across multiple programs, the award states. White provided technical leadership in the development of sonar array systems employing the new type of acoustic sensor that measures the velocity of sound waves vice measuring the sound pressure level. This technology offers improved acoustic performance.

“White brought rigor and a healthy skeptical approach to the design, fabrication and installation of the large vertical array (LVA) on the USS South Dakota bringing a new level of acoustic superiority to the fleet, which also resulted in significant cost and schedule savings,” the award states.

Beyond her LVA contributions, White provided subject matter expertise to investigate the phenomenology of flow noise associated with flank arrays, enabling the identification and resolution of issues. She established a one-of-a-kind facility at Division Newport to analyze at-sea data in support of the Submarine Security Technology Program/SSN/SSGN Security Program.

“White’s exceptional dedication, personal initiative, and total commitment to duty have provided unprecedented benefit to the Division Newport, the warfare centers, the Naval Sea Systems Command, the U.S. Navy, and the nation,” the award states.

Pat Eno, head, Sensors and Sonar Systems Department, presented the award to White during a ceremony held on Sept. 13.

White also recently won a 2022 National Defense Industrial Association Bronze Medal, an annual award that recognizes outstanding individual achievements in science or engineering in the field of undersea warfare. Read more about that award here.
