Oktoberfest at NAS JRB Fort Worth Brings Community Together

NAS JRB FORT WORTH, Texas – Originating in Munich, Germany in 1810, Oktoberfest is a celebration that has become a popular tradition all over the world.
On Sept. 23, more than 200 service members, retirees, and family members gathered at the Bowling Center parking lot to enjoy the annual Oktoberfest festivities, sponsored by the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) of NAS JRB Fort Worth.
Commanding Officer, CAPT Mark McLean, performed the ceremonial tapping of the keg at 6 p.m. officially kicking off Oktoberfest.
“I have always been impressed with the incredible job our MWR team does hosting these events on the installation. This year’s Oktoberfest was a tremendous example of the best MWR has to offer,” McLean said. “I can’t imagine there was a better place to be on a Friday night, at the beginning of fall, than to gather outdoors with military families and friends, enjoying great food, a large selection of adult beverages and outstanding entertainment.”
MWR Bowling Center and Theatre Manager, Robert Alex, and the MWR team coordinated the event. The team wanted to ensure it was a fun and exciting time for everyone.
“This event is really about letting the adults have some fun, while incorporating a family element to it,” said Alex. “This is a very family-oriented base, so everything we do keeps all ages in mind.”
There were several child-friendly activities for families to partake in, such as: pony rides, a petting zoo, and a craft making station. Activities for adults included: a live karaoke band, a variety of beer and the opportunity to compete in several competitions.
To highlight the abundant German history of Oktoberfest, authentic German food like: bratwurst, sauerkraut, and pretzels were served. Additionally, to further complete the ambiance, German decor was incorporated and spread throughout the event.
Air Traffic Controller Petty Officer 2nd Class Harold Miller, was one of the many service members who participated in the Oktoberfest festivities. This was the second year he attended with his wife and daughter.
“After Covid happened, it was really nice to get out and see everyone outside of a work environment” Miller explained. “This is a very fun event for us, I see they have a karaoke band, which I’ll definitely be doing that later.”
Brittney Santiago, a Navy spouse, who lives on base, decided to capitalize on an evening out with her husband and two sons.
“I live right around the corner, so we decided to make this an evening out,” said Brittney. “I like that there are things for my son to do, a petting zoo, food and drinks.”
