    Joint Munitions Command

On Sep. 14, 2022, the Joint Munitions Command hosted its second outreach event of Fiscal Year 2022, supporting the Army’s number one priority of people, and the constant efforts to win the war on talent. In the spring, JMC specifically targeted college and university career-planning and placement centers to share information on the benefits of federal employment and provide tips on completing applications. This fall, JMC invited students to participate. Tanner Schuldt, a recent addition to the JMC G-1 team said, “It’s exciting to see JMC look for opportunities to reach students on their level and in a manner with which they are familiar. Many private sector companies are advertising and recruiting through online forums, and JMC is learning how to compete. I wish there had been something like this when I was completing my job search.”
The two-hour virtual forum, hosted by the JMC G-1, provided JMC branding information and explained the mission of the command. However, the primary focus of the event was to share information on the diverse career opportunities within the command, as well as provide information about a “day in the life” of a new JMC employee, educate students on the benefits of federal employment, and explain the application process.
A recent article published by FEDWeek showed that less than half of college students and graduates are considering federal jobs because they feel unqualified, they aren’t aware of the many opportunities available, and because the hiring process seems too complicated. Alex Moore, a quality assurance specialist, and Layne Thresh, a logistics management specialist, participated in the event by providing information on their work and experiences with JMC. Thresh stated that she chose to participate because she wanted to share her knowledge and positive experience with people who are graduating and looking for jobs, a position that she was in not all that long ago. She said, “JMC is a great place to work, and I wouldn’t want someone to miss out on applying just because they have misconceptions of what a Civilian position looks like.”
Nate Hawley, the director of the Munitions Logistics Readiness Center, was the keynote speaker for the event. “I’m really excited to share all that JMC has to offer with students looking for jobs. I think there are a lot of misconceptions among students that they need specific degrees or that our job opportunities are limited. I hope that we helped to dispel those thoughts and opened minds towards joining JMC,” he said. Hawley also stressed that JMC speakers focus on providing information that would benefit students looking for any federal position. “While we hope they apply to work for JMC, we wanted to set up these students for success with their job search at any federal agency. We want to let them know that the government has so much to offer them,” he said.
JMC will continue to track progress of this pilot-program effort to see if there is an increase in brand recognition at job fairs they attend this fall. G1 is also looking at ways to improve future events and reach as many applicants as possible to modernize and improve recruiting efforts, dispel the misunderstandings about federal employment, and bring JMC more equal footing with private sector competitors’ recruiting and hiring efforts.
JMC produces small, medium, and large-caliber ammunition items for the Department of Defense. JMC is the logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed. JMC’s logistics operation is unique to the Department of Defense and its industrial base is an important asset in supporting the warfighter.
