Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Amongst the Army

    FORT CARSON, CO, UNITED STATES

    Story by Spc. Collin MacKown

    14th Public Affairs Detachment

FORT CARSON, Colo. - The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program is a way for Soldiers to experience outdoor activities, and meet new peers for an affordable price. MWR is an Army wide program, and has plentiful outdoor trips in Colorado, spanning across all seasons.
Josh Scott, a 4th Infantry Division veteran and Outdoor Recreation Assistant for MWR, acts as a mentor for outdoor activities and shares his hobbies with Soldiers.
“I was able to transfer my joy and love for outdoor activities into working here (MWR) as a guide, and I also have the experience as a veteran, so I know what it's like having been in the military. I know this kind of stuff is really good for Soldiers and building unit cohesion,” said Scott.
Most U.S. Army posts have outdoor recreational facilities that serve Soldiers and train them in different activities. The goal is to train Soldiers in outdoor skills to apply them for lifelong recreation.
“The big thing about MWR is we try to offer these activities at a rate affordable for Soldiers and much more competitive than alternative services,” said Scott.
On September 15, 2022, Scott was one of the assigned instructors for a rock climbing class, alongside Fern Martinez, an Outdoor Recreational Assistant with MWR. This class is available as a “Warrior Adventure Quest” program, which is for platoon sized elements, and acts as a way for MWR to treat platoons to a free outdoor recreational class once a year. Every platoon is eligible for one Warrior Adventure Quest a year, starting Oct. 1, 2022.
“Some of them were nervous and some of them had a little bit of background rock climbing,” said Martinez. “It’s one of those things you might see on TV or you see someone else do, but it takes a mentor to teach you how to get into that sport.”
The class consisted of learning how to harness yourself, how to act as a belayer, and how to safely rock climb while harnessed. Also, it acts as an introduction to rock climbing, but is designed for individuals of all skill levels. All safety gear was provided by MWR to ensure each Soldier attending the course is prepared and is equally ready.
“Ever since I started working at Fort Carson, I loved the Soldiers. They’re just an awesome group. I love the camaraderie and the diversity,” said Martinez.
MWR is a useful program for Soldiers to help build morale amongst each other, learn new skills, and be a part of a local community. There are a variety of recreational opportunities in the state of Colorado, and are scheduled differently every year to bring variety to MWR.
