Maintaining Partnerships: Emory S. Land Hosts the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

The submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) hosted Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) submarine JS Takashio (SS 597) sailors for meetings, Aug. 12-16.
While moored at Naval Base Guam, Takashio leadership toured the tender and discussed the ability to conduct conservation and preservation level maintenance on Takashio, which would show the ability to integrate capabilities in order to enhance readiness and showcase interoperability between the coalition forces.
“Our capability to merge maintenance teams and get the job done shows the strength of our alliance, and is evident of our commitment to our partner forces in the IndoPacific region,” said Capt. Andrew Ring, commanding officer of Emory S. Land. “Knowing that we could conduct a repair period with our partners allows peace of mind for our allies to continue their mission.”
The United States and Japan have forged a relationship built on a shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, and regularly conduct bilateral exercises and operations to strengthen regional adherence to international norms.
Cooperation in maintenance-assistance supports the U.S. Navy and JMSDF mission to develop regional capabilities that provide layered defensive options to protect their interests and those of their allies and partners.
Land is one of two Navy submarine tenders that provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
