MILWAUKEE – The 128th Air Refueling Wing held a speed mentoring event for airman of all ranks here September 10.

The speed mentoring program was envisioned by the then 128 ARW maintenance commander Air Force Lt. Col Laura Ambers in 2017 as a way for airmen to gain career insight from senior enlisted in a relaxed, personal atmosphere. The goal of the mentor event is to provide our airmen a meaningful opportunity to share knowledge and build relationships through different professional perspectives.

“Speed mentoring provides the ultimate chance for airman to gain relevant knowledge, grow professionally and share resources that many airmen may not know exist,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Scott Zane, the 128 ARW quality assurance chief inspector. “We as a wing must execute this program to provide experienced airmen with the opportunity to share their experience and insight with less experienced airmen in a relaxed and engaging forum.”

The yearly speed mentoring event has been a success since its establishment, said Zane. Feedback on speed mentoring is positive, with airmen stating they are hearing about more resources available to them during their discussions at mentor sessions.

“We select topics based on the recommendations of our 20-member team of mentor volunteers,” explained Zane. “We also follow up on topics used in previous years that were big hitters.”

Zane knows the power of mentoring from his own experience. “Chief Master Sgt. Tom Safer, our former State Command Chief, has been a huge mentor of mine,” shared Zane. “He was a mentor of mine from back when I was a young airman and continues to help me today. His participation with the Enlisted Field Council, Wisconsin National Guard Enlisted Association, and volunteering to serve in his community outside of his job scope has been an inspiration to me.”
