U.S., Jordan hosts a senior leader seminar with 28 partner nations

AMMAN, JORDAN – The U.S. and Jordanian Armed Forces conducted a senior leader seminar as part of Eager Lion, Sept. 13, 2022, in Amman, Jordan.

In addition to being a platform for senior leaders from several nations to discuss issues and concerns, the SLS served as an opportunity for leaders to share ‘best practices’ by exchanging the knowledge and skills required to manage and lead effectively in complex environments.

Brig. Gen. Matthew S. Reid, commanding general, Naval Amphibious Force, Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, agreed these seminars are important to help the U.S. sustain mature relationships in the region.

Quoting the poet Miskeen Al-Darimi, Reid said, “A famous Arab poet said, ‘Keep your brother’s side, for whom without a brother is a warrior in battle without a weapon.’”

“We fight together, we train together, we think together,” Reid continued, “These seminars are how we grow our kinship.”

Twenty-six countries participated in the seminar alongside the U.S. and Jordan. Eager Lion, a combined joint multilateral U.S. Central Command field-training and command-post exercise, aimed at enhancing regional security and stability by responding to modern-day security scenarios being conducted by more than 1,850 U.S. service members, 2,270 Jordanian counterparts, and 820 coalition personnel from 26 partner nations who are participating or observing the multilateral military training exercise Sept. 4-15, 2022.

And if exercise Eager Lion is considered the crowning event of the broader U.S. military relationship with the Jordanian Armed Forces, one of U.S. Central Command’s strongest and most reliable partners in the region, then the seminar is its main jewel said JAF Brig. Gen. Kayed Joarat, director of military training.

“We live in a world that faces threats that can pass through borders and across continents, expanding like a virus in the body,” Joarat added, emphasizing the need for cooperation. “There is no country that lives in isolation from these threats.”

Kenya Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Jonah M. Mwangi, the vice-chancellor of the National Defence University-Kenya agreed no one is insulated from these threats.

“Indeed, invitation to the multinational exercise Eager Lion 22 demonstrates the robust strategic partnership between Kenya and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which affords opportunities to grow capabilities to effectively respond to current and emerging threats,” Mwangi said. “Thus, promoting international peace and security."
