    DENVER, COLORADO, UNITED STATES

Story by Staff Sgt. Anthony Torres

    10th Special Forces Group (Airborne)

FORT CARSON, Colo. — Members of the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) received training hosted by the Denver Fire Department (DFD), Denver CO., Aug. 17-18, 2022. Two teams from the DFD special missions team provided training that specializes in high-angle rope rescue, trench collapse rescue, rescue within confined spaces and all water rescue in Denver.
“This training provided us the opportunity to apply some of the skills we have learned in a more real-world scenario,” said a green beret within Group. “It’s not an everyday chance to learn a different perspective from people who do it daily.”
On the first day, the green berets and the DFD trained on vehicle extrication. Vehicle extrication is the process of removing a vehicle from around a person involved in a motor vehicle accident when conventional means of exit are impossible or not advised in that situation. A delicate approach is needed to minimize injury to the victim during the extrication. This operation is completed by using rescue hydraulic and power tools. These tools included rotary saws, extrication shears and extrication spreaders.
“This was definitely an eye opener to different techniques that we can utilize within our operations,” said a green beret within Group.
The group was divided into teams of four and rotated through different scenarios utilizing inoperable vehicles. The group members had to learn different techniques depending on the scenario they were a part of to perform a simulated vehicle extrication. Every scenario and tools available for those scenarios differed as well.
Day two focused on the operators getting into tight spaces, also known as confined spaces. Confined spaces are those that are large enough to enter and perform work inside; have a limited or restricted means of entry or exit, typically found in industrial settings, commercial facilities, hospitals, universities, and various types of tanks and cargo hold spaces on ships. The Soldiers from Group spent the day training with the DFD and focusing on rescuing casualties in different scenarios. The purpose of this day was to demonstrate and teach different techniques for getting personnel in and out of several confined spaces.
After several iterations of utilizing the techniques taught by the DFD, Operators utilized their newly acquired knowledge to run through a simulated rescue supervised by the DFD. The rescue consisted of one of the green berets entering a confined space and other team members performing a confined space rescue.
“It was a very tight space and being able to use what we learned proved extremely beneficial during the rescue,” said a green beret with Group. “Cross training with the team that does this on a daily basis and learning what they have to go through is something that we can definitely use within our organization.”
The Soldiers who participated were able to apply and reinforce the methods they were taught. This training also provided an opportunity to be involved within the community, showing that U.S. Army Special Forces do not solely work with Department of Defense forces but also with civilian entities.
