FARAH, Afghanistan — The Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team is working to bring electrical power to Farah City, beginning with District I, which is currently 70 percent complete according to Walley Muhammad, the local Afghan contractor in charge of executing the electrification project.
With the help of the PRT, Walley, who owns and operates the F.E.C. Construction Company of Farah, and his 25 employees have managed to install 280 electrical poles in and around District I as well as string countless yards of electrical wire to provide a much needed alternative power source. Once the project is complete, a generator will supply the district, and eventually all of Farah, with electrical power that has not been available to its residents and will certainly increase their quality of life.
"I can't wait to see my district and all of Farah lit up with reliable electrical power," said Majid, a local merchant who owns and operates a business inside District I. "Not only will my family feel safer and be able to enjoy all the amenities that require electric power, but it will also be good for my business and commerce all across the city."
Electricity will allow city residents to increase their current levels of sanitation and to operate pumps that will ultimately provide running water to individual homes.
Furthermore, the new power supply will allow city residents to utilize small appliances inside their homes and will extend business hours past sunset for all businessmen.
"This is a great project for Farah," said Walley as he walked along the streets of District I alongside engineers and civil affairs representatives of the PRT. "Electric power was once a foreign capacity only dreamed of here in Farah. Now, thanks to the help of the PRT, we are able to make that dream a reality for ourselves and for our children."
