4th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office

FORT CARSON, Colo. - Pvt. Devin Holden, a mortarman assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, sits in a small two-person shack as he checks individuals coming into the Military Training Complex (MTC) at Fort Carson, Colorado. Holden, along with his squad leader Sgt. Joshua Likins, originally from Lancaster, Ohio, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., maintain security at the gate as the 4th Inf. Div. conducts a Command Post Exercise across the various ranges at Fort Carson.

The CPX is a week-long training event that helps the division maintain readiness in preparation for future deployments to fight and win our nation's wars. Every Soldier plays a key role regardless what their job is, and Holden is no exception.

"Our job is to maintain security here at the MTC,” Likins said. “Pvt. Holden is on it. Every time I call him on the radio about a task, he’s already gotten it done.”

The guard detail consists of a team of six Soldiers from various brigades who rotate doing 24-hour shifts at the MTC. Though it may seem like a daunting task, Holden and his fellow Soldiers find ways to make the job a success.

“It’s not that difficult, but it is important,” Holden said. “I see myself as the first line of defense in this training.”

Holden, a Soldier from Portland, Texas, acknowledges that no job is more important than the other and that the success of one’s job is dependent on how well another individual does theirs. “We do our job so others can do theirs,” said Likins. “No job is meaningless.”

As for Holden, he’s happy to contribute to the 4th Infantry Division as a Soldier, a job he took on to help him on his journey to college. While he may not be setting fuses on an artillery round during this exercise, he still understands that he has an important role in the U.S. Army.
