    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

With 26 nations coming together for the world’s largest maritime exercise, making sure all personnel involved are healthy and safe is a key component in making Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 run smoothly.

A main component of making sure the people involved with RIMPAC 2022 is healthy and safe is the Combined Force Maritime Component Commander (CFMCC). Royal New Zealand Navy Lt. Olivia West, a health planner for the CFMCC, is one of many involved with implementing the Annex Q, a health instruction for all forces participating in RIMPAC.

“We track any trend in reporting from the ships in terms of what they’ve got going on health wise, or if there are any spikes in patient numbers in COVID cases,” said West. “We provide real support for any casualty evacuations required. And just the rest of the time ironing out any planning in terms of logistics, mass casualty, con ops and health related planning.”

To support all partner nations, communication is essential for West to effectively and efficiently do her job to help all 38 ships out at sea.

The theme for RIMPAC is Capable, Adaptive, Partners.

“Capable is to do what needs to be done, adaptive for me is changing as we need to,” said West. “Partnership is coming together and achieving one common goal

Twenty-six nations, 38 ships, three submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2022 is the 28th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
