CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Military spouses operating home-based businesses while stationed at Camp Humphreys may be subject to penalties if operating illegally. To help, Army Community Services is providing free home-based business training classes. The United States Army Garrison Home-Based Business program shows command sponsored community members how to serve the community while earning an income.
“The important thing about a home-based business is it offers spouses the opportunity for employment and to earn some income,” said Heather MacLeod, Army Community Service employment readiness manager. “Take into consideration 83 percent of spouses have some form of education. About 40 percent have a bachelor’s or more when they come to Korea, they are losing a substantial amount of income. So, owning a business allows them to be creative and earn a living.”
MacLeod went on to say home-based businesses are a great way to fill in the gaps on your resume and create longevity in a career you can enjoy because you built it.
However, before any transactions can take place, prospective business owners must attend the hour-long home-based business training class given every second and fourth Friday of the month in the ACS conference room .
“In the training meeting we go through a list of requirements needed to obtain approval for their home-based business,” said Richard Cathers, home based business program trainer with the employment readiness office. “We give them the name and email address for the point of contact with the (Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation), which spearheads the program. They submit their application, which they must attach a copy of their command sponsorship orders and their home-based business training card, which we give them. Then, everything goes through the MWR, housing, Army & Air Force Exchange Service, environmental health and if everyone approves then the application goes to the garrison commander for approval. The approval allows the new business owners to start operating out of their home.”
Cathers said the program is divided into two categories: home-based businesses whose owners who live on-post, and community participants, whose owners who live off-post. All business owners are allowed to sell their products and services on post, to include setting up booths during community events. The only difference is community participants must have a Korean business license in order to operate out of their home.
MacLeod said she highly encourages business owners to obtain a Korean business license whether they live on or off-post.
“They are not required to have a Korean business license if they are not planning to do business off post, but we do encourage them,” said MacLeod. “It is in their best interest to cover themselves if they are going to be working out of their house. In many cases, we also recommend they get an alien registration card when they get their license. They just never know when they may want to sell off-post or may work with the Korean population.”
Cathers said in order to get your business license, visit the Pyeongtaek tax office with your housing contract, alien registration card and a unique business concept. Customer service will direct you to an agent to help you with the forms and procedures for your business. Once you are done head back to the tax office and you will receive your license.
“The hard work is getting the right form and talking to the right people,” said Cathers.
