    The Originals: Celebrating 70 Years

    FORT CARSON, CO, UNITED STATES

    06.22.2022

    Story by Sgt. Ashley Sanders

    10th Special Forces Group (Airborne)

FORT CARSON, Colo. – In the dictionary, a birthday can be defined as a day of origin. For 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), that day of origin has come for the 70th time.
June 19, 2022, marked 70 years for the Originals and naturally, such an occasion called for a massive celebration. From 13-17 June, 10th SFG(A) held a jam-packed 70th anniversary Organization Week, followed by an anniversary ball on June 18th to finish out the week leading into the organization’s day of origin.
The unit’s Organizational Week commenced with an opening ceremony, led by the Group command team – 10th Group commander, Col. Lucas VanAntwerp and Group Command Sgt. Maj., Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Dorsh. Group personnel gathered to hear words from the command team and officially kick off the events for the week.
“There are a few reasons for this week,” said VanAntwerp. “This week is about competition; we’re not going to get away from that. We’re going to remember our fallen. We’re going to connect with alumni. And the other piece is that this is about family.”
First on the list of events for the week was the Commander’s Cup, a friendly competition between battalion teams and individuals through sporting events. The lineup for the competition included ultimate football, kickball, a “top shot” competition, the fittest Original, a golf tournament and a softball tournament. The Commander’s Cup took place throughout the week, with the winners being announced during an awards ceremony held at the end of the Org Week.
Not only did the week focus on fun, sports and friendly competition, but the unit was sure to incorporate briefs and seminars catered towards mental toughness, becoming a better Soldier, strengthening families and relationships, resiliency and leadership, along with traumatic brain injury awareness and brain health. These briefings and seminars included guest presenters on each of the topics and were spread throughout the week amongst other activities.
“In line with the theme for this week – invest in yourself, invest in your relationships and invest in your family – this is our chance to be able to learn from individuals that are highly successful and have done it at every single level,” said Dorsh during one of the seminars for the week.
While there were no shortages of informational briefs and seminars, 10th SFG(A) most certainly left no stone unturned for events that were dedicated to gathering past and present Originals in celebration of the 70th Anniversary. “The Meeting” was centered on alumni and current Green Berets coming together to partake in the legacy of 10th Group, share experiences with one another, honor the fallen and pass along wisdom for future Originals.
“I look forward to special occasions like this all year because the alumni mean everything,” said a 10th SFG(A) Green Beret. “I have the utmost respect for those who came before me, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Every morning I walk into work and every night I leave, I pass the memorial area and am reminded and inspired by what we do and stand for.”
10th SFG(A) remained true to honoring and remembering fallen Green Berets during the unit’s Organizational Week, to include a building memorialization in honor of fallen Staff Sgt. Patrick Quinn, a newly-built Trojan Horse unveiling in Thorne Plaza and a fun-filled family day to round out the week.
The event to culminate the week was the 70th Anniversary formal ball, held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. With around 1400 guests in attendance, the formal ball was a night dedicated solely to celebrating 70 years of the Originals. Guests included Soldiers of 10th Group, family, friends and alumni of the unit, Gold Star Families, Special Forces command teams from across the world and other notable figures in the Special Forces community.
A 70th Anniversary only comes once. For 10th SFG(A), this was an opportunity to bring together Soldiers, alumni, family and friends to share in such a momentous occasion. 70 years down and a lifetime left to go for 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) to continue earning it.
“Tomorrow is not a right; earn it.” – Col. VanAntwerp
