UNIVERSITY OF MAINE, ORONO, Me. (June 25th, 2022) -- The 101st Air Refueling Wing hosted the Contemporary Base Issues course here at the University of Maine in Orono.
More than 100 Air National Guard members from the 101st and 21 other units attended the course. The sessions offered legal refresher training on topics ranging from ethics, progressive discipline, and court case studies. They also discussed the legal and personnel issues that Guard bases around the United States face today and how they tie into national security strategies.
“The target audience is mid-level to group-level commanders, supervisors, and First Sergeants,” said Maj. General Meaghan Q. LeClerc, the Air National Guard Assistant to the Judge Advocate General of the United States Air Force. “Most of the time when we get feedback on this course, we actually hear that members wish that they had gotten this opportunity sooner. We are thankful for the Maine Air National Guard for their hospitality and support in helping provide this course to those who attended this weekend.”
Assisting Maj. General LeClerc were 5 other cadre members, Col. Michael J. Berens, Lt. Col. Michelle Hagel, Lt. Col. Yvette T. Yarbrough, Maj. Ambar Vyas, and Master Sgt. Leeann N. Melton. This group of instructors were brought together to present several different topics for the CBI as well as unique personal experiences during their time as legal advisors for the Air National Guard.
“The Air National Guard puts on these CBI courses all over the country to help our senior leaders understand current regulations and hear from the national cadre of Judge Advocates who are subject matter experts on this topic,” said Capt. Elizabeth Hoffman, the Judge Advocate for the South Portland Air National Guard Station. “The wing has been very supportive of the educational opportunity for our members as well as visiting members from other units.”
“I have been to several CBI courses in the past, and each one was so important because of the changing landscape throughout the Air National Guard,” said Col. Ian Gillis, 101st Air Refueling Wing Commander. “We are honored to host this incredible opportunity in Maine for our senior leaders to participate in as well as get the education necessary to support the rest of our airmen in the Air National Guard.”
