The 50th Expeditionary Signal Battalion-Enhanced (ESB-E), 35th Corps Signal Brigade welcomed their new commander during a change of command ceremony at Fort Bragg, N.C., on June 16, 2022.
Lt. Col. Merlin Kynaston, an Elizabeth City N.C. native, assumed command of the 50th ESB-E from Lt. Col Mallory Wampler. The ceremony was officiated by Col. Bernard Brogan, the commander of the 35th Corps Signal Brigade.
“Mallory, the undeniable success of the 50th ESB-E during your command is now a part of your legacy,” said Brogan. “I could not be more proud of you.”
Wampler, a native of Pittsburgh, relinquished command after two years and is heading to the Pentagon to work in the office of the Army’s Deputy Chief of Staff, G-6. During her remarks, Wampler highlighted the unit's accomplishments, including supporting two no-notice deployments in support of the XVIII Airborne Corps to Afghanistan and Europe. She thanked her Soldiers for their hard work and dedication during her time in command.
“Over the past two years, I've watched these Soldiers push the envelope, write the playbook for the ESB-E and become the standard,” said Wampler. “The things these Soldiers were able to accomplish set a precedent for how the Army can leverage ESB-E capabilities.”
Kynaston assumes command of the 50th ESB-E following his previous position as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff G-6 at XVIII Airborne Corps. He recently returned from a deployment to assure our NATO Allies and deter further aggression.
During his ceremonial remarks, Kynaston recognized all of the 50th ESB-E Alumni in attendance for the ceremony saying, “I am honored to be joining such a storied organization.” Kynaston said that the living legends in attendance at the ceremony “shows the commitment to this organization that exists right now – Mallory you have joined the ranks of those living legends.” He added that he's thrilled to begin his command stating, “It's great to be a part of team 5-O.”
Kynaston is married to Lt. Col. Anastasia Breslow-Kynaston and has two daughters, Genevieve and Evangeline.
The 50th ESB-E was the Army's first signal battalion to be modernized into an enhanced expeditionary signal battalion and is the only ESB-E with Soldiers on jump status.
