FORT WAYNE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. - Amidst the loud flybys of the combat-tested F-16 Fighting Falcon, explosions of runway-lined pyrotechnics, and the massive crowd in attendance for the 2022 Fort Wayne Air Show, there lied a much different event meant to be the exact opposite of the fast paced show. Sensory Hour gave individuals with sensory processing sensitivities the opportunity to enjoy a less crowded and less overwhelming experience before the main gates opened June 5, 2022.

“Events of this nature encourage inclusion of all people, especially those who have been historically under served and excluded and I am happy to do my part to make this event happen,” said Master Sgt. Brent Maddox, Sensory Hour point of contact assigned to the 122nd Fighter Wing. “I am proud of the wing for hosting this event.”

The aim of Sensory Hour was to limit some of the sounds and smells that may discourage those with sensory sensitivities from visiting the air show. The experience, which was open to the general public, offered preferential parking close to the event, as well as access to a Sensory Room and noise cancelling headphones if the air show becomes too stimulating.

“I have a loved one that is impacted by a sensory processing disorder, so this event is very near and dear to me,” said Maddox who recruited and trained volunteers, coordinated with outside agencies for support and handled other logistical details for the hour. “The directors of the air show have made it clear that this event is a priority for the wing and the Fort Wayne Air Show.”

Sensory Hour hosted an estimated 55 guests, giving them full range of access to all static displays and booths without the overwhelming presence of thousands of people around them.
