SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Fleet Week (LAFW) 2022 and the Battleship USS Iowa Museum hosted an education roundtable with subject matter experts from the U.S. Navy and the private sector in San Pedro, Calif., May 24, 2022.
The roundtable took place on the decommissioned battleship-turned-museum and was focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs and opportunities for women and minorities in Los Angeles County.
Tiffany Ellerbeck, education manager at the USS Iowa Museum, helped organize the event.
“Having different people come together from the various sectors: formal, informal, military and industry to brainstorm possible solutions to increase equal access and diversity is a big benefit,” said Ellerbeck.
In attendance were several representatives from Navy Recruiting Command West, Northrup Grumman, along with a variety of educators from local high schools and colleges.
“From a Navy perspective,” said Cmdr. Philip Ujie of Navy Recruiting Region West, “this allows us to network with local educators and team up on projects. It helps us give a good impression of the Navy and our own programs we’re trying to institute.”
Fleet Week is an annual, multi-day celebration of our nation’s Sea Services held on the LA Waterfront at the Port of Los Angeles over the Memorial Day Weekend. Free to the public, the event features public ship tours, military displays and equipment demonstrations, live entertainment, aircraft flyovers, and a Galley Wars culinary cook-off competition between Navy, Army, Marine and Coastguard teams. The event is May 24-30.
