BUCHAREST, Romania – Most times when Soldiers are celebrated, it’s because they rose to action in aid of fellow service members. For Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Security Forces Assistance Brigade, the passion to selflessly serve extends past familiarity in faces.
After completing the NATO Combat Readiness Evaluation course, U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Jesse Schuster, Sgt. 1st Class Otto Niesluchowski and Staff Sgt. Tyler Coburn, all assigned to 4th Security Forces Assistance Brigade, witnessed a Romanian ally get struck by a motor vehicle.
“The car itself probably dragged the soldier on its hood for about thirty-ish meters and when we saw the soldier get hit, we jumped out of the car,” recalls Otto.
The team immediately sprung into action and worked to render first aid to the casualty. Coburn described the team as “level headed” during the incident and accredited their Senior Medical Advisor U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Courtney Foster, for their training that they received.
“Sgt. 1st Class Niesluchowski immediately jumped on ensuring he was immobilized, since our primary concern was spinal or neck injury,” said Coburn. “I was splinting up his leg with 1st Sgt. Schuster and we were trying to control some of the bleeding from his scalp.”
The team worked alongside Romanian medical soldiers present at the scene to effectively evacuate the casualty to receive proper medical care.
“We continued to provide as much aid as possible until the Romanian medics and ambulance showed up with more equipment,” said Schuster. “We helped direct the medics on which injuries were the most important to treat and how to efficiently evacuate the casualty.”
Currently the soldier is in stable condition thanks to the efforts of the 4th SFAB team’s heroic actions. They received a Letter of Commendation from Multinational Division Southeast Commanding General Maj. Gen. Christian-Daniel Dan for taking action to save a fellow NATO member.
When asked what it meant to be honored for their actions the 4th SFAB team echoed a similar sentiment, the call of duty is something that should always be answered.
Niesłuchowski remarked, “the army has instilled a very specific set of values in each and every one of us, and it’s not about Soldiers helping Soldiers, it’s about people helping people.”
