With summer approaching, there’s an increased threat of on- and off-duty accidents, throughout the Defense Department. The DoD refers to this as the 101 Critical Days of Summer. Accidents, as a whole, can be expensive and painful, and hinder our missions. DoD’s 101 Critical Days of Summer, a long-standing, annual safety campaign geared for Service members to have injury-free summers.

To combat this, the Belvoir Installation Safety Office hosts Safety & Wellness Day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., May 19, at the Belvoir Exchange parking lot.

Safety Day educates the community of Service members, families and civilians in accident prevention and safe operations, at home and at work. Through information booths, hands-on demonstrations and displays, the community can learn about factors that contribute to accidents, and how they can be prevented.

The wellness aspect of Safety Day promotes the commander’s fitness program. Wellness participants include the American Red Cross, Army Substance Abuse Program and the Armed Forces Wellness Center on Belvoir.

“We really think everyone who comes out to Safety & Wellness Day will learn something,” said John Nicklas, a safety specialist at ISO, adding the event is a collaboration with safety professionals from federal and state entities.

Some of what is expected at Safety & Wellness day is a canine demonstration from the Directorate of Emergency Services; and hunting safety, in conjunction with the Directorate of Public Works Environmental and Natural Resources Division; and weapons safety at home.
Fire department personnel will offer fire-extinguisher confidence training; in-home, fire safety information; and child vehicle safety information. Children may be drawn to the fire trucks and emergency vehicles that are part of the day.

State police will offer a golf cart equipped with all the normal distractions, like the radio, phones and passengers, and how they affect safe driving, according to Nicklas.

“The day is all about how we do our jobs, safely,” he said.

“We want as many people as possible to come out to the Belvoir Exchange on May 19,” said Bridget Pilgrim, Garrison safety manager. “This is a true collaboration with many partner organizations and entities. We expect everyone who comes will leave with knowledge about their personal wellness or how we safely complete our missions, across the board.”
