FORT BENNING, Ga. – A member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Action Shooting Team was named high overall champion of the 2022 Palmetto State Armory United States Practical Shooting Association Multigun Nationals on April 3 in Clinton, South Carolina.

The Action Shooting Team’s newest member, Private 2nd Class John Wiedell, took the top title after shooting over 400 rounds on twelve different stages. Wiedell joined the team in February of this year after completing basic training at Fort Benning. The Emily, Minnesota native also won first place in the Open Division.

“I felt as if I was shooting a consistent match and I was not leaving much for the taking,” said Weidell. “The race came down to the third and final day of the match where I finished with four solid stages. My performance on those stages allowed me to keep my lead and come out as the overall champion.”

But the USAMU Soldiers didn’t stop there. The team also had top rankings in other divisions.

Spc. Houston Russell placed first in the Limited Division.

“Going into each stage for Nationals, I felt super prepared and focused,” said the Fort Bragg, North Carolina native. “After shooting strong on the first day, I knew that all I had to do was shoot consistent and it would turn out well… which it did.”

Sgt. Nate Staskiewicz placed first in the Tactical Division. The Omaha, Nebraska native beat Daniel Horner, a former USAMU team member who has twelve USPSA Multigun National Championship wins.

Staff Sgt. Jacob Hetherington, a Prescott, Arizona native, placed third in the Tactical Division.

Sgt. 1st Class Joel Turner placed 4th in the Open Division.

“I felt confident going into Nationals,” said Turner, the assistant team leader. “I lost 80 points on the first and most important stage because a swinger didn’t activate. Everything was going so well, and I hadn’t planned for the unexpected. Even though I didn’t win the match, I couldn’t have been happier to watch Jon carry the torch and win the championship.”

“Nate [Staskiewicz] beat Daniel Horner, a former team member,” the Anderson, South Carolina native, added. “Daniel hadn’t lost a Nationals to anyone in years. To me, that speaks volumes.”

"I couldn’t be happier for Nate [Staskiewicz],' said twelve-time USAPSA National Champion Daniel Horner. "He’s a great Soldier, instructor, competitor and friend. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years at the USAMU. He is an incredibly hard worker who always has the best interest of his team in mind. He is definitely one of the Soliders the USAMU should value and be very proud of."

“My team won each division at Nationals,” said Turner. “That’s extremely rare. Watching them, especially the newer members, perform so well makes me confident in their abilities to carry the torch and lead the team to greatness when I retire,” he said.

Turner still has four years until retirement.
