“Be a sponge,” said Joe Marshall, Systems Accountant in the Business Resources Division, when asked about advice he would give to those entering a career with The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “Take on as many duties as you can to continue to progress in your career.”

This advice proves to be fruitful, as his attitude of determination and journey toward self-development and self-improvement has given Marshall eight noteworthy years with USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division.

Last Friday, April 15, Marshall was selected as Employee of the Month by Division Commander, Col. Kimberly Peeples, nominated by his coworker and Staff Accountant, Monique Wiggins.

“Joe successfully executes the deployment and maintenance of Corps of Engineers Financial Management System modules. He created a document to ensure employees are better able to request CEFMS access, and he works with the districts monthly to update the effective rate,” said Col. Peeples. “Joe recently took on additional duties with the Chicago District as a Cost Share Control Manager to provide assists during their time of need, while continuing to perform his duties with LRD without missing a beat.”

Initially a Pathways student in 2014, Marshall had his eyes on the Resource Management office, and more specifically, an accounting role. His determination paid off, as he not only achieved this goal, but has happily been a part of the team ever since.

Marshall finds many things about his role fulfilling. Above all, the flexibility, freedom, and brain stimulation are the qualities he enjoys the most.

“The freedom to telework has given me amazing work and personal life balance,” said Joe. “My superiors give me the flexibility to do the job my way and develop my own battle rhythm to produce and complete tasks. Being a Systems Accountant for the Corps of Engineers has helped me develop a huge knowledge base and is daily brain stimulation that I need.”

Of course, there’s more to Marshall than his career with USACE. However, he continues to bring his optimism, curiosity, and determination to better himself into his personal life outside of work.

“I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and learn new things. Reading books, listening to podcasts, studying literature and physical fitness endeavors are a few of the things I do to become a better person every week,“ said Marshall. “Being able to build a wealth of knowledge has helped me be a better husband, father, friend and colleague.”

Marshall also enjoys being physically active. He enjoys camping, hunting, and the outdoors - all of which can be provided by many of USACE’s recreational sites across the region.

“Joe is continuously willing to learn and assist anyone who needs help and always has a smile. He genuinely epitomizes the Corps values and is a true professional,” said Col. Peeples. “Joe’s dedication to serve the organization and our nation exemplifies the motto USACE – ‘essayons’, and is yet another example of how LRD continues building strong, together!”
