The Ramp! Experience team and U.S. Marine Corps musicians teamed up to introduce the first Ramp! Experience event at Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead, Mississippi, March 10 – 11, 2022.

“The Ramp! Experience is beneficial because it helps bring the importance of music education back to a geographical location that used to flourish,” said U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Justin Hauser, the 4th Marine Corps District Musician Technical Assistant. “The Mississippi Delta has produced some amazing musicians over the years, and it would be an amazing thing to see music grow in the schools in the area.”

The Ramp! Experience provided students from over 20 high school and college bands the opportunity to collaborate and learn together.

“It is a joy to be able to lift up music education in this region and beyond,” said Cameron Jenkins, a Ramp! Experience team member. “If you look at the logo, it’s a crescendo, and for all of the musicians out there, you know that the crescendo means that you start at one volume, and you gradually get louder over time. So, that is what we are trying to do. We are trying to lock arms with the students, music educators, and administrators in the local school districts … and lift up their voice in the community.”

The event gave band directors and U.S. Marine Corps musicians the opportunity to meet and discuss ways to improve the music program as a whole.

“The Ramp! Experience helps bring professionally trained musicians and resources to schools who do not have a lot of exposure to those resources,” said Hauser. “Marines providing master classes to the students ... helps them improve musically, which helps the school's programs in the long run.”

During the event, the students were divided into groups based on their instrument and given master classes led by Marine musicians who specialize in that instrument. These classes provided the students with the opportunity to ask questions about their specific instrument to then better understand how to improve their techniques when performing musically.

“I believe the first Ramp! Experience was very successful,” said Hauser. “With more Marine musicians and maybe even more time to work with the students, I think we could make an even bigger impact.”
