A Queens, N.Y. native and 2016 graduate of Moon Valley High School is serving aboard Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ralph Johnson (DDG 114).

Petty Officer 3rd Class Glenmark Gervacio is a Culinary Specialist, also known as CS, serving aboard USS Ralph Johnson, forward-deployed to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

Culinary Specialists operate and manage dining facilities and are can be found on every ship and shore base in the Navy.

“I decided to join the Navy to provide a better life for my mom,” said Gervacio. “Things were hard for us and we couldn’t afford a lot of the basic necessities. I wanted to be able to help her out.”

With more than 300 crew members on board to prepare meals for, Gervacio explained why his job is important to the Navy.

“As a CS, my job is to provide good food to my fellow Sailors,” said Gervacio. “The mess deck is the heart of the ship and CS’s are vital to boosting the morale of everyone onboard.”

USS Ralph Johnson recently shifted homeports from Everett, Wash. to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka and Gervacio is fully prepared to enjoy life to the fullest while stationed in Japan.

“I’m really enjoying being stationed in Japan,” said Gervacio. “On a scale of one to ten, I’d say I’m at a nine for how much I like it here so far. I haven’t gotten to explore too much yet, but I can’t wait until I can.”

The Navy doesn’t just give Sailors the opportunity to explore new places and cultures from around the world. Many Sailors come out of the Navy having learned important life lessons as well.

“One thing that I’ve learned through my time in the Navy is that everything is a process,” said Gervacio. “You don’t come in knowing everything you need to know. The longer you’re in, the more you learn about your job, time management, and how to be a good leader.”

Gervacio joined the Navy in 2015 and shared, not only what he is proudest of accomplishing so far, but what he hopes to accomplish in the future.

“The achievement I’m proudest of, so far, is getting my surface and air warfare qualifications,” said Gervacio. “I want to keep that momentum going, though. I want to make 2nd class (petty officer) and go to “C” schools so I can keep learning about different parts of my job so I can pass that knowledge on to the other CS’s that I work with.”

Ralph Johnson is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific. U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet is the largest forward-deployed fleet and routinely operates and interacts with 35 maritime nations while conducting missions to preserve and protect critical regional partnerships.
