Leaders from Marine Corps Installations East (MCIEAST) and local area school superintendents who have significant numbers of military-connected students, gathered on Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune to network and share best practices at the Paradise Point Officers Club on March 3, 2022.
“There’s three big things that a family looks at when they move: Education, housing, and medical,” said U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Andrew M. Niebel, commanding general of MCIEAST-MCB Camp Lejeune. “Education may be one of the most important parts, as Marines shouldn’t have to worry about their children not receiving quality care at school.”
With 70 percent of Marine Corps families across the Camp Lejeune area residing off-base, and approximately 16,000 school-aged children, Niebel believes ensuring Marines’ families are taken care of directly affects the readiness of the Marine Expeditionary Force.
“I think these meetings and get togethers are really important and critical for our future,” said Ms. Jennifer Wagner, director of public relations, Craven County Schools. “It is imperative for our school system leaders to be able to hear the current events that are happening, not only for our military installations, but for families firsthand, so that we can know how to be there, especially when and if we have the resources available.”
With the coordination of Purple Star Schools, Niebel believes that the close ties between local education professionals and MCIEAST leaders can enhance a system designed to improve the quality of education that students receive as they transition schools every two to three years. Purple Star Schools are uniquely suited to serve children in military families through programs and curriculums that create continuity in their education as their families are serving their country.
“Today was a great opportunity to not only hear what’s happening from within our installations, but also to hear about the partnerships and connections within the school systems,” said Wagner. “It was also a way to see how we can help our military-connected families from both the Marine Corps and school system standpoint.”
