    Janus Workshop

FORT CARSON, Colorado – In preparation for the transition from service member to civilian, a group of Operators and Enablers in 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) recently participated in a workshop called the Janus Program, which placed an emphasis on purpose, direction, identity, and networking.
The Janus program, unique to Special Operations Forces service members within 24 months of transitioning, was started in 2019 with a focus on fulfillment and life after the military. The workshop consists of informational briefs provided by subject-matter experts and covers a multitude of topics, including what can be expected during and after transitioning.
“We want to help special operating forces transition into a life of peace, contentment and balance,” said Andrew Stamp, director of the Janus program. “For a lot of service members, this can be a restorative process. The sacrifice someone gave over the last 10 or 20 years means they deserve the opportunity to put themselves and their families first and do something important for themselves.”
The seminar also provides tools and resources that will contribute to more successful and fulfilling endeavors post-service.
“We focus on value, mission, vision, purpose,” said Stamp. “This workshop is about giving the resources someone needs and to help them do things effectively and help them do right by their families.”
The length of the course, along with topics of discussions, are based on the requests of the unit. Ultimately, the guest-speakers are not only chosen to provide resources, but also for purposes of instilling confidence and motivation ahead of the transition process and to minimize anxiety going forward.
“I am so glad that I attended,” said a Green Beret in attendance of the course. “There were numerous benefits from attending the seminar. It was nice to sit in a class with other Special Operations Soldiers who were having similar thoughts and feelings that I was.”
The Operator went on to express how the workshop helped him identify gaps in his preparedness regarding transitioning from the military. The class made him realize that he needed to prepare for life after the military as strongly as he prepared for the Special Forces Qualification Course.
The name Janus comes from Roman mythology. Janus is the god of transition and has two faces: one looking back to the past and the other facing forward, looking to the future. On the bottom of the Janus program logo, written in Latin are the words “Partum Vestri Posterus”, meaning “create your future.”
“The idea behind ‘create your future’ is that in the military, you are told what to do,” said Stamp. “So now, it’s your turn: create a plan. If you take charge and are deliberate with your planning, you can control your future.”
