William Beaumont Army Medical Center plans to launch Military Health System GENESIS, a new electronic health record (EHR) and patient portal, in the summer of 2022.

The Department of Defense’s new EHR system known as MHS GENESIS allows patients to have full access to all medical records under one system. All branches of service will have complete access to their medical records.

“MHS GENESIS will provide a single EHR to replace multiple legacy information technology systems. The system will close gaps and provide one location for all healthcare record information. This system will improve healthcare provider visibility as patients are transferred from outpatient to inpatient services and vice versa that traditionally utilized multiple systems,” said Maj. Shaun OLaughlin, MHS GENESIS site point of contact.

A key feature is the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, a one-stop shop that allows two-way communication between patients and providers. The MHS GENESIS Patient Portal will replace TRICARE Online Patient Portal. The secure website has around-the-clock access to individual and family health information, including visit notes, test results, scheduling appointments, and online prescription renewal.

“One of the new benefits is having access to patient notes within 72 hours from your visit and prescription detail about your new medications,” said Marcus Williams, MHS GENESIS Patient Portal Specialist.

Beneficiaries will have to create a DOD self-services (DS) logon. Those who have a DS Logon account need to have a premium upgrade.

MHS GENESIS will reach over 93,000 TRICARE Beneficiaries, retirees, and service members in the El Paso Market. With this system, the user will have direct contact with their provider. The DOD plans to fully integrate the program across all military hospitals and clinics by 2024.

WBAMC completed months of extensive preparation to include training, system infrastructure, and equipment upgrades.

"Furthermore, once the VA healthcare system transitions to its new EHR, the two EHRs will be compatible, improving the transition of a beneficiary’s health information between health systems. Lastly, MHS GENESIS is compatible with most EHRs utilized in the civilian sector. The emerging technologies provide a more robust and reliable EHR with improved usability to deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centered care to our beneficiaries," said OLaughlin.
