The rock band, Sick Puppies, performed an acoustic concert for troops at Novo Selo Training Area (NSTA), Bulgaria, December 29, 2021. This performance was a part of Armed Forces Entertainment’s holiday tour across Europe to visit forward deployed troops in countries such as Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and Kosovo.

Sick Puppies, an Australian rock band, was formed in 1997. They gained popularity around 2007 when they released “All The Same” onto YouTube, receiving more than 78 million views.

“I’ve been listening to them since I was a kid,” said Spc. Rafael Escamilla, a drone operator with 7th Air Cavalry Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry Brigade. “I remember always carrying a CD player because of them.” Escamilla, a Chula Vista, California native, had the privilege of introducing the band as they took the stage.

Soldiers were allowed to meet and interact with the band; Novo Selo Training Area hosting some lifelong fans.

“It’s a lot of travel, but when seeing how much it means to them, it makes it worthwhile,” said Emma Anzai, one of the band’s founding members, bassist and backup vocalist.

The band was treated to a tour of the base that included meeting Soldiers as they performed maintenance on vehicles. The band were allowed to view vehicles, ask questions and view equipment.

“I got to sit in a tank for the first time,” said Bryan Scott, lead singer and guitarist of the band.

The band and Soldiers exchanged stories throughout the show with the band handing out autographs to all who attended the show afterwards.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, NSTA had a 50 person cap on the concert. All 50 seats were filled before the band took the stage.

“We have the utmost respect for the things that our troops go through for our country,” said Mark Goodwin, drummer and backup vocalist.

Events like these organized by Armed Forces Entertainment and hosted by the MWR, enhance and support the quality of life for Soldiers, which is directly tied to increased Army readiness. By continually working to improve the quality of life for our people, they can excel and maintain resiliency thereby increasing our ability to fight and win on tomorrow’s battlefields.
