Soldiers from the 30th Medical Brigade joined Service Members from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Ramstein Air Force Base to administer voluntary COVID-19 booster shots to approximately 1,600 individuals at Kleber Gym, Kaiserslautern, Germany, on December 8, 2021.
Victory Medics helped manage patient flow, checked paperwork and eligibility, pre-filled syringes and administered shots. According to Sgt. 1st Class Woodrow Wilson, 512th Field Hospital Emergency Management Team non-commissioned officer-in-charge, the booster shot rodeo was a good opportunity for 30th MED Soldiers to interact with their LRMC counterparts and build camaraderie, as well as provide an important community service.
The FDA has amended the emergency use authorization to allow for a voluntary single booster shot, for fully vaccinated individuals, of fully authorized or emergency use authorized vaccine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people 65 years and older, 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions, or 18 years and older who live in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot at least 6 months after receipt of a primary mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) series.
People ages 18–64 years at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may get a booster shot based on their individual risks and benefits at least six months after receipt of a primary mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) series.
People 18 years and older should receive a booster shot at least 2 months after receiving their Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine.
According to Lt. Col. William Murray, LRMC, their team is administering about 1,260 vaccines each day. Eligible DOD ID card holders should make an appointment to receive their booster shot. Appointments can be made online at https://informatics-stage.health.mil/COVAX/.
