A day in the life of Westover Air Reserve Base Security Forces: Script

    CHICOPEE, MA, UNITED STATES

    12.05.2020

Story by Senior Airman Dylan Auger

    439th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

SrA Auger: In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the week of May 15 National Police Week. The observance honors law enforcement officers currently serving and officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Westover’s law enforcement component, the Security Forces Squadron, maintains security on the base at all times.

TSgt. Jackie Hammond: I’m Tech. Sgt. Jackie Hammond. I’m a flight sergeant with the 439th Security Forces at Westover Air Reserve Base. I’ve been in the military and security forces twenty-nine years, with active-duty time and reserve time altogether. I conduct guard mount training in the morning, I do roll call and make sure all personnel are at work. I make sure everything is taken care of for the flight chief, so when he goes out to do inspections, he doesn’t have to worry about doing so much work. I also am the vehicle control officer, which means I control all vehicles within the unit. I make sure the maintenance in taken care of if there is any discrepancies within the vehicle, I turn those things in and make sure that everything is taken care of on that side of the house.

In security forces, we allow entry and exit onto the installation. We control requests that anyone is trying to gain access onto the installation to make sure that they don’t have any warrants or anything outstanding that stopping them to come on to the installation. We also have the inspection bay. We search all commercial vehicles, making sure that when they enter onto the installation that they don’t have anything that can cause any harm to anybody on the installation. We also have patrolmen. Patrolmen ride around, they patrol, they are pretty much the law enforcement side of the house. They make sure that everyone is obeying the traffic rules and regulations on the installation.

We also have our CATM section. Our CATM section takes care of all the firing that has to be conducted on the base, whether it’s annual firings or qualifications for deployments.

We render all customs and courtesies to individuals coming on the installation, so if they’re starting off a bad morning, when they come to us at the gate, hopefully we can turn that day around for them and get them going on a better start to their morning.
