ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – The Housing Working Group is finding ways to combat the ongoing housing shortage at Ellsworth.

Airmen at Ellsworth have been having a difficult time finding housing off base due to the increased population in the local community, including nearby Box Elder and Rapid City.

“Something more unique to [the] Rapid City area is there is not a lot of town homes,” said Chief Master Sgt. Rory Peters, Housing Working Group lead action officer. “There’s just a lot of single family dwellings, there are apartments of course, but not enough to support the booming population.”

On-base housing is not much different. On-base housing is usually near 100% percent capacity the majority of the time, according to Peters.

To find a solution to this ongoing problem, representatives of the Housing Working Group from the 28th Operations Group, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron, 28th Medical Group, 28th Bomb Wing Legal office and many more meet at least once a month. Occasionally, the civic leaders are involved to get a feel for what Airmen and their families are facing when they arrive at Ellsworth.

“This is the time for us to work harder because we just witnessed issues that we had to work through, some of us for the first time,” said Becky Pisle, the 28th Bomb Wing’s privatized housing resident advocate. “That’s why we can’t let up what we’re doing because we’ve got to stay focused so next Summer goes smoother than this past Summer.”

The Housing Working Group is making strides to assist inbound Airmen with house hunting. Some of these successes include utilizing the Air Force Connect App as an information database, allowing new Airmen to stay in the on base hotel temporarily, and continuing relations with local community leaders in order to have a constant flow of up-to-date information.
