WIESBADEN, GERMANY – On Nov. 23 the Department of the Army announced that the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Directorate of Emergency Services is among the recipients of the 2021 Army Community Partnership Award.

The program recognizes examples of outstanding cooperation and diligence that enhance readiness, drive modernization and encourage continued collaboration to reach the full potential of community partnerships. It also recognizes strong community partnerships that improve the quality of life for service members and their families.

USAG Wiesbaden and the German Host Nation Police (Polizei) were chosen for their longstanding partnership. The Wiesbaden military community is comprised of over 15,000 personnel, operating on 14 different sites, in two separate states. To ensure proper protection across this large installation footprint, the DES works alongside the Polizei to provide efficient resources and staff in emergency events.

“The USAG Wiesbaden DES, the Polizei precincts of Wiesbaden and the Polizei President of West Hessen continue to build upon the excellent relationships created by previous leaders. Additionally, our fire and emergency services teams habitually support one another during both planned and emergency events,” said Lt. Col. Jon Jackson, Director of Emergency Services.

Jackson added, “We view the protection of our communities as a layered security apparatus that begins with the sharing of information, conducting joint training, ensuring interoperability during execution and doing so with mutual respect.”

One aspect of the DES’s and Polizei’s successful partnership includes conducting monthly meetings to discuss topics such as current threats, mitigation measures, security of housing areas, laser incidents, joint patrol efforts, training opportunities and ongoing investigations.

“The partnerships between the USAG-Wiesbaden and German Polizei, fire and emergency services ensure the readiness, resilience and safety of all our teammates and is critical to the health, life and safety of the entire USAG Wiesbaden community,” said Jackson.

In the past, an event made possible by the relationship between USAG Wiesbaden and their German partners, was the Berlin Airlift anniversary. The two-day international event drew over 50,000 visitors, and was operationally supported by over 400 Polizei, Fire and EMS personnel from the Host Nation.

Most recently, the DES and their German partners hosted this year’s First Responders Day celebration. The event showcases an annual parade through the installation’s housing area and gives the community a hands-on and unique glimpse into what first responders experience in their jobs. It also offers local Wiesbaden residents the chance to see how the garrison’s emergency services department works side-by-side with their German counterparts, highlighting police and firefighter activities from both nations in a relaxed environment.

“Once again, we are excited to recognize these outstanding partnerships that create efficiencies, build resiliency, enhance readiness and improve the quality of life for Soldiers and their families,” said Lt. Gen. Jason Evans, Deputy Chief of Staff, Army G9 (Installations).

The partnership award recognized seven installations and their community partners this year and a ceremony will be held virtually in January 2022.
