SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii-- Career Counselors across the 25th Infantry Division tested their skills in the annual Career Counselor of the Year Competition, a three-day competition held on Wheeler Army Airfield from Nov. 15, 2021, to Nov. 18, 2021.
Army career counseling is an integrated effort between commanders, officers, noncommissioned officers, and career counselors. Its mission consists of four phases: Integration, Professional Development, Sustainment, and Career Development. These phases are designed to prepare Soldiers for the future, whether they plan to have a long-term Army career or return to civilian pursuits.
The 25th Infantry Division Career Counselor of the Year Competition includes a submitted Career Counselor of the Year packet, a written exam, multiple mystery events, and a board, explained Master Sgt. Jason Clarke, the 25th Infantry Division Retention Senior Operations NCO. Participants in the competition consisted of both active-duty and reserve component Soldiers.
The exam tested the participants knowledge about policy, regulation, retention mission breakdown, and service computations. It included writing a 500-word essay about how the Army Combat Fitness Test affects retention in the Army. The mystery events were situations that put each counselor's knowledge to the test, including calculating for a soldier's lost time as well as identifying soldiers within the command that did not meet service remaining or retention requirements.
In the final event, the counselors were selected in random order to appear before a board composed of senior non-commissioned officers to have their uniform and appearance inspected. The board members then asked the career counselors a series of questions to assess the depth of their knowledge on career counseling and Army retention. Following the board, the counselors’ scores were calculated and the winners were selected.
On Nov. 19, 2021, the 25th Infantry Division's commanding general, Maj. Gen. Joseph Ryan, recognized and awarded the winners for their outstanding display of excellence throughout the competition.
The Career Counselor of the Year winner for the 25th Infantry Division, active-duty component, was Staff Sgt. Shawne Gauldin, from the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, while the winner from the Reserve Component was Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Griffin, a Soldier representing the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
“It's great that I can go out and represent my command, the soldiers I serve, and the 25th Infantry Division,” said Gauldin, “and winning it is gonna help me be a better career counselor for whoever I'm serving.”

    Editor's Note:
The winners of the 25th Infantry Division Career Counselor of the Year Competition will move on to compete in the U.S. Army Pacific level competition.
