FORT BRAGG, N.C. - The Christmas tree for this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting celebration arrived at the Main Post Parade Field, Nov. 22.

This year’s tree is a 24-foot Fraser Fir and came all the way from Mistletoe Meadows Farm.

In the coming days, the special events team with the Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation division will decorate the tree and transform the Main Post Parade Field for the upcoming event.

The Christmas Tree Lighting and Family of the Year celebration will take place on Friday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. This is a deviation from years past, as historically the event has taken place on the first Thursday after Thanksgiving.

“We are extremely excited to be able to offer this event on a Friday this year,” said Theresa Smith, FMWR special events coordinator. “We hope more Families are able to enjoy the activities now that the event isn’t taking place on a school night.”

The event kicks off with the announcement of this year’s Family of the Year Award. Each year, Fort Bragg’s Army Community Service accepts applications for the Family of the Year. The program honors Soldiers and Families that have provided exceptional service throughout the calendar year. This year 21 applications were received.

“There are so many exceptional Families here at Fort Bragg,” said Alice Stephens, ACS program coordinator. “It is such an honor for us to receive these applications each year and to be able to help recognize some of our amazing Families.”

Other activities will include holiday entertainment by the 82nd Airborne Division Band and Chorus, trackless train rides, holiday lights and inflatable displays, a cookie-decoration station, and Santa will jump in with the Golden Knights. Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.
